The Healing Waters

– The story of Cole and Emilee

“Heavenly Spa”….indeed.  When my German Shepherd Cole and I finally ventured to Heavenly Spa we were more than amazed!  I’d become aware of the business by passing it on occasion and through our beloved pet sitter, Jewlz Lane from Carnation and Loving Care Canine Services.

Cole had ruptured his right ACL and had surgery in December 2008, with a long, long 4-month rehab period.  In June of 2009, he came down with a very serious spinal infection called discospondylitis.  This also had a very long recovery period.  Between the two health issues, along with his age, his limbs were in danger of atrophy.

I too was suffering with health issues:  a long depression which finally led to a diagnosis of a gene mutation known as “MTHFR” which can cause multiple known illnesses and plagues 44% of the population with 1 mutation, and 12% of the population has 2 mutations.   I am in the double mutation group, and to top it off, it was discovered that I also had celiac disease and a dairy allergy.  I had lost 43 pounds, literally starving to death while eating!

Fortunately, I found Dr. Karen Ball www.drkarenball.com.  She was able to correctly identify my health issues and helped lead me on the road to recovery.

Throughout my illness, Cole had become more and more “allergic” and “hyper-sensitive”.  His hair was falling out, as was mine.  He was depressed as well!   It was a most distressing time, to say the least.

Being a former avid swimmer, I felt that it would be worth it to give Heavenly Spa a try.  Our previous female German Shepherd , “Annie” had learned to swim as a pup, and I knew this would be great for Cole’s limbs if he took to the water.

During our first session with Claire, he needed some coaxing to finally walk down the stairs into the invitingly warm pool.  He sang out, possibly in mild protest, but did swim and retrieve his now favorite soft platypus.

With each visit Claire’s coaxing time grew less and now Cole practically jumps in!  He loves it!  And I am equally benefitting from the healing waters, swimming laps or practicing water aerobics while Cole is enjoying his therapy with Claire.  Cole has gained valuable muscle mass and his coat shines.  His limbs are true and strong.

I so look forward to our weekly time and Cole sings with joy as we go up the long driveway.  I can’t wiat for my coffee from Teri at Celestial Espresso.  Heavenly Spa….indeed!

Making the Best of Summer with your Dog
Information courtesy of
Woof Report

Prepare for the Unexpected. Add the numbers of a 24/7 animal poison control center and your nearest 24/7 vet hospital to your cell phone and place the numbers near your home phone. Create a pet first aid kit and place a pet rescue window alert on an outside window of your home to notify firefighters there are pets inside.

ID Check. Make sure your dog’s ID tags and microchip records are updated if your phone number or address has changed. And if your dog is not microchipped, consider a visit your vet or seek a local clinic to get one.

Exercise Together. Walk your pup at least twice a day to burn off extra calories, release pent-up energy and keep your dog healthy…he or she will love you for it and it’s good for you too! See Woof Report’s new tip How to Get Fit with Your Dog's Help for tips on exercising with your dog.

Let the Games Begin. Engage your dog in mental exercise as well with treat dispensing and puzzle toys and a weekly game of hide-and-seek. And vow to teach your dog of any age (older dogs included) a new trick every other week or once a month. Download 101 Tricks to Teach Your Dog from the Dog Scouts for ideas and then google the name of the trick to find instructions, or pick up Kyra Sundance’s fun instructional book, 101 Dog Tricks.

Create a Dog Health Record. Stop by WoofReport.com to download a free Dog Health History Form. It’s all you need to track your dog’s health and help your dog's vet provide better care.

Feed Your Dog Well. Take time to research your dog's food and the other options that are available to make sure he’s getting the very best. Visit the independent websites dogfoodproject.com or dogfoodadvisor.com to see how various brands stack up.

Groom On. Commit to maintaining a good grooming schedule. Regular brushing, bathing, nail clipping and weekly teeth brushing all keep your dog healthy, comfortable and looking good.

Try Something New. Take a class with your dog – anything from a refresher course with a trainer to maintain your dog’s good behavior to fun classes like agility and flyball offered at your local SPCA. Or maybe this is your dog’s year to help others and look into training him to become a therapy dog!

Help a Shelter. Not all pets are as lucky as yours, so help pets in need by donating money, goods, or your time (your dog will be happy to share you for a good cause). There are many ways to volunteer – from taking photos of shelter pets, to fostering, and posting profiles of available pets online. Begin with a minimal time commitment if it makes it easier to get started.

Start a Pet Savings Account. Regularly put aside money in a dedicated savings account or simply in tuck it an envelope, and use it for vet care, grooming or even a new collar when your dog’s wardrobe needs a boost.

Research Resources. This is your year to lock in good pet-sitting resources long before you schedule a trip. Take the time now to read reviews, visit facilities and meet pet sitters to find just the right fit for dog care while you’re away.

Spend Quality Time with Your Dog. Give your dog your undivided attention each and every day. Play with your dog or cuddle on the couch and give your pup an extended ear rub. And get to know and understand your dog’s likes and dislikes to improve and strengthen your bond.

Clean the Pup Stuff. Round up all of your dog’s toys and give them a good washing (see Woof Report’s past tip on cleaning your dog’s toys), and launder all your dog's bedding. Then make a plan to keep up the clean – for instance, wash your dog’s toys the first of each month and your dog’s bedding every other time you wash your sheets.

Emily the Pug Princess

This story is told by Emily’s Mom -  Betty Cutler.

It was a warm day in August 1993 when Emily came into our lives and she has had us wrapped around her paws ever since.

Emily has a wonderful life doing the things that puggies love to do, being the clown and keeping us entertained.  She loved to chase our mastiff until the mastiff gave in. Emily thought she was a mastiff too and just had not grown up yet.

Her favorite activity was to get a ride on the tractor after the grass was cut. She would wait patiently for her ride and she never wanted it to end.

She has had many adventures over the years including going to the Pug Gala. She stuck pretty close to us because she was afraid we would take the wrong pug home.

After we moved to Issaquah, she met another puggie named Coco. They would go for walks putting their heads together, usually sniffing the same blade of grass, peeing on the same spot & trying to be Queen of the peeing scene.

We were on vacation in Cannon Beach when Emily started limping and had to be carried home as time went on her walks became shorter and her sniffing a little longer, she was losing her hearing as well as her eyesight and she had just turned 12.

We tried a lot of different medications but her spine and her legs were getting weaker and as time went on she had a vestibular seizure.  With the help of Dr. Howard Friedman, acupuncture and homeopathic treatment, Emily gradually started to recover.

Dr Friedman recommended Heavenly Spa and Emily found her joy! She loves the water and looks forward to her trips. She loves Claire and Teri and she enjoys Mrs Honey and Leo when they are out and about.

Emily is so proud of herself after a swimming session. This treatment has expanded her life and given her a lift she would not have otherwise enjoyed.

Emily will be 17 in June 2010 and she is truly our miracle pug, she has taught us what life is all about.

Carmel’s Corner

am now 16 months into my journey, starting with not walking and being very overweight.  Through swimming, acupuncture and a new diet I am a walking, leaner version of my old self.  I am aerobically fitter than I have ever been – due to swimming – this is where my “people’s” problem comes in.  I have more energy and zeal for life but I still have these old legs.

My people have worked hard to come up with new games and activities that I can do – but I still have energy to burn    Beagle’s love to find things!  One new game we do – when I am outside my family hides pieces of my kibble on the main floor of the house.   I see them doing this through the windows so when they open the door I come running in and start hunting – sometimes it takes about 45 minutes for me to find them all.  Another new game we play is another hiding game.  They have a piece of kibble and hide it in their hands – I try to catch it in between hands – I love this game - lots of barking and quickness on my part wins the game.

I used to go for long walks – that is not allowed now – but we are trying short walks to the end of the block and back – once in awhile we go too far and they have to carry me part of the way home – but we will adjust the distance so I can do the round trip.  This will be a work in progress for us but with everyone’s help and suggestions I think we will find a perfect solution to keep an old Beagle feeling and acting as young as possible!

Warning on Hand Sanitizer and pets

A 4 year old girl was rushed to the hospital after she licked hand sanitizer off of her hand.  Her symptoms were lethargy, unable to hold her head up and her eyes were unable to focus.  Her blood alcohol was very  high even 6 hours after ingesting the hand sanitizer.  Be very, very careful with hand sanitizer around your pets.  If it can cause this kind of reaction in a small child, imaging how dangerous it will be around pets.  Here is the link to the complete and verified story:  http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/sanitizer.asp

Heavenly Spa Client of the Month – The Curious Case of Roxie Carrigan

This story is told by Roxie’s Mom, Chelsea Carrigan.

Roxie is our supernatural companion; last summer she became unable to get up, walk or stand on her own. For 3 months her life consisted of wetting her bed most nights and being carried outside each morning which was a two-person job.  We had taken Roxie to our previous veterinarian who had recommended a specialist and one led to another. After seeing three vets and consulting two on the phone as well as a dentist and a dermatologist Roxie’s only prognosis was euthanasia.

We knew there had to be more hope for a 9-year-old dog that was itchy, arthritic and had some bad teeth. After hours of searching the Internet we discovered a vet in Bellingham, Dr. Donna Kelleher, who was the answer to our prayers.  After her first chiropractic and acupuncture treatment Roxie took the first steps she had taken in over three months. We discontinued the pricey, problematic tramadol and deramaxx pharmaceuticals she had been on for three years. Eight weeks later after being recommended on a weekly basis to Heavenly Spa, we scheduled our first appointment.

It is impossible to forget lugging our 106 lb. Mastiff, Rottweiler, German Sheppard, and Lab mix to her first swimming session and then carrying her back out of the pool to the car. Fast forward to today Roxie weighs 76 pounds swims twice a week, is on a raw diet, herbs and only has acupuncture every five to six weeks, down from her original weekly appointments. We now bring five of our seven dogs to Roxie’s bi-weekly appointments at Heavenly Spa and everyone has lost a total of over 100 pounds combined. Our animals especially Roxie have a new existence on this planet being in the best shape of their lives.

Roxie has gone from not being able to move on her own, to going up and down stairs and getting in and out of the pool. Her favorite thing besides playing ball used to be standing in the car with her head out the window, now she is able to do both and has even jumped out of the car to speed walk to the pool and gotten her front legs back in our SUV after an hour of warm water therapy. Even today April 24th Claire and I witnessed her first attempt run again; everyday is a blessing with Roxie as she continues to amaze us. We are forever grateful to Dr. Donna Kelleher, Teri Sahm and Claire McLaughlin for giving her a chance and believing in her, then going above and beyond and allowing her heal and thrive, if it weren’t for them Roxie would have departed this earth well before her time. She is truly a miracle.

Heavenly Spa Green Meter in honor of Earth Day

Eco-Friendly, earth-friendly, going green…whatever you choose to call it, it is all about reducing your carbon footprint and pawprint, being kind to the earth, creating a safe, healthy environment and hopefully leaving the world a better place for generations to come.    The practices I have implemented in the business have been long-established with me due to my own sensitivities to soaps, hair products, skin products and makeup; a pre-disposition for migraines due to certain foods and/or sugar and sugar substitutes.  I am also an avid gardener and I believe that you are what you eat.  Because of that I have long been adverse to pesticides in my food or environment.

§  Biodegradable, earth friendly or organic soap for bathrooms, laundry and dishes

§  Biodegradable, earth friendly cleansers are used in the house and spa – we use a LOT of vinegar

§  No synthetic pesticides, fungicides or herbicides are ever used on any of the grounds

§  We compost as much as possible including dog hair from the spa and coffee grounds from the espresso stand

§  The espresso stand uses organic coffee, tea, milk, syrups (where available) and all baked goods are organic

§  We recycle as much as possible

§  We use biodegradable dog poop bags

§  We use biodegradable garbage bags in the summer and recycled garbage bags otherwise (the biodegradable bags will break down in the rain unfortunately)

§  We bring in organic dirt and plant organic seeds

§  We recycle our ink cartridges from the office printer

§  We have replaced as many light bulbs as possible with the new CFL light bulbs

§  We turn on lights only as necessary

§  We turn off the pool when not in use saving electricity and propane

§  We use a pre-filter on the washer, dryer and pool to filter out minerals and metals from the well water. This keeps our chemical use in the pool at its lowest and most efficient level

§  We use recycled and no chemically whitened paper products

§  We have upgraded our old washer/dryer to Energy Star compliant, highly efficient products

§  Our pool heater is in the 90% efficiency range

§  The dehumidification system in the pool house is Energy Star rated and uses no chemicals, only air exchange

§  We pull the cover over the pool if there is a break longer than 1 hour

§  We purchase toys to be used in the spa that are phthalate free

§  We sell and/or suggest organic, natural and homeopathic products to our clients in the spa
